Art / Fashion / Architecture – Folds and Borders. On a Project of Silvia Kolbowski and Peter Eisenman for Comme des Garçons

Fashion designers, artists and architects share a long history of being fascinated and influenced by each other’s works and ideas. In the last 20 years, the crossovers between these different disciplines have become more and more spectacular and have challenged traditional divisions: fashion is presented as art in art contexts, art works are conceived of as fashion pieces, architecture is inspired by art and fashion created by artists like Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, Cindy Sherman and Rem Koolhaas. The article discusses a project by the artist Silvia Kolbowski and the architect Peter Eisenman at the Comme des Garçons store in Soho, New York, in 1995. Kolbowski/Eisenman used cuts from the fashion collection 1994/95 to develop an architectural installation in the store that challenges the character of the store as a “white cube” using the fold as a medium of transformation. The theoretical idea of the fold is used to compare the fashion design of Rei Kawakubo with architecture, theorizing the fold as a different path to spatial and body awareness.
