Abstract

Images of the Inside of the Body Since the Foundation of Human Sciences

The article aims at analyzing visual aspects in the discourse on the body since the late 19th century. It focuses on visual representations of the body’s interior or – in a broader sense – the idea of an inner core, e.g. the soul or the unconscious tracing of its genealogy from the Early Modern period through to present-day contemporary art. Examples range from Jean Cousin’s “Eva prima Pandora” (1550) to Ivo Saliger’s “Der Röntgenologe schießt mit Röntgenstrahlen auf den Tod” to Odilon Redon and the video works of Tony Oursler.
